EPISODES
EPISODE 66: 1st FEBRUARY, 1965: Meg is attempting to take the breakfast trays to the guests and Jill – whose job it is – is nowhere to be seen. Meg gives Philip his lighter (formerly Charles Richardson’s) and says Jill found it at the bar last night (awkwardly). Sandy is sent to wake Jill up, as she appears to have slept in again – when he returns he says she’s not in her room, she’s gone.
Charlie and Janice are looking over the coming week for the car hire firm formerly known as Drury’s. Its been Night and Day since Dick and Amos took over – but now Charlie has saved it no matter what the name, the business is his. He goes on to boast about his many years running businesses in America, but when Janice asks why he returned to England he swiftly changes the subject.
“Oh, I’ll go back to the States again. My ambition is to have a transatlantic business one of these days. I’d live here and go over there on long trips.” – Charlie Forward
Dick arrives and Charlie states they need to think big, they can’t keep turning business away. He wants to add more cars ‘we can’t run this firm on just seven chauffeur-driven cars and eight taxi cabs’. Dick isn’t keen to get into lots of debt but Charlie is keen on a swift expansion.
At Shopday Store Kitty is serving Miss Tranter and village busybody Hilda Duvene – described as ‘a widow about forty with a rather overpowering personality’. Hilda is boasting about her great success in the local dramatics and observes it’s such a shame Dick isn’t able to be involved anymore. Kitty says she’ll have a word with Dick and hopefully soon he’ll have more time for his hobbies again once the car hire business has enough staff.
Meg discusses with Philip the row she had last night with her daughter before she ran away. She informs him that Jill thinks romance is blooming between the pair of them, the lighter being the final confirmation Jill needed. Meg says its all just been a very emotional time, especially for Jill and her ‘teenage obsession’ with Philip.
Dick and Kitty are talking about the visit by Hilda to the shop this morning, he says she was one of the reasons he quit the Kings Oak Players, she has feelings for him and became a pest..

EPISODE 67: 2nd FEBRUARY, 1965: Meg gets a visit from the police. Thinking the worst, she assumes Jill has had a misfortune. However, the policeman says he’s come to discuss the abusive phone calls.
Having spoken to Vi Blundell, to get a rundown of the kind of contents the abusive calls take, the police are to listen in to the calls to the motel to try and track the caller who is ringing with vile comments about unmarried mother Christine, a waitress at the motel.
“Les is down the pub, and he wouldn’t be interested anyway. [In the rude phone calls to the motel] I told him about it the day it happened – Wednesday – I told him all about what was said on the telephone – an when I got to the end, you know what he said… ‘probably wrong number’ He wasn’t even listening” – Vi Blundell
Winnie – Ralph’s sister, who cares for their mother and is home all day – is pleased to get a visit from neighbour Vi, who can’t wait to give her the latest gossip from the motel, especially the goings on with Christine.
Charlie has started to ride over Dick’s running of the Night and Day car hire firm – renaming it Traveleze ‘Travel Ease’. Dick isn’t impressed but there isn’t anything he can do about it.
Meg gets a call from Sarah Payne in London to say Jill arrived there late yesterday and she is fine. She’s looking to stay a while and not to worry. Meg however can’t help but feel concerned.

EPISODE 68:3rd FEBRUARY 1965: Meg is fretting about Jill being in London, thinking – wrongly that Philip and Meg are in love with each other. Philip suggests there isn’t anything to worry about and Jill will be in touch when she’s ready to talk. Vi complains about how much dust seems to gather so quickly in the motel. She blames the M1.
“I wonder Philip if you’d do me a favour? I think I’m going to drive down to London, could you look after things for me here?” – Meg
A Jack Mandel comes to the motel to make arrangements for accommodation in the following week. He says he’s the production manager of Holts International Films and they will be location filming in the area shortly. Jack wants rooms for three people across two weeks. He notes most of the crew is staying at The Red Lion Hotel in Castlewich, but he’s looking for something a little more upmarket for the director, producer and himself.
Hilda pops back into the shop to see if Dick has had any thoughts about resuming his acting with the Kings Oak Players. Kitty says he thinks he’ll be too busy. The play, from 1939, Friday Night at Mrs. Pilbeam’s really could do with more male actors. She leaves a script for Dick to look over.
Sandy is excited to be heading off to the football match with Colin but is less happy when he discovers Colin’s sister Kate is also joining them at the match. Sandy however is impressed by Kate’s knowledge of Aston Villa.
Christine is running late, Philip has had to go to see his old boss at the TV Repair company and Meg is in London – leaving Carlos to run the kitchen and reception, he struggles to deal with the checking-in of Arthur Hardy and his wife – they are far from impressed with the service, over at the football match Sandy, Kate and Colin are having a great time.
Meg arrives at Sarah’s flat in London, they discuss the situation with Jill and how she has this ridiculous idea Meg is in love with Philip Caroll. The front door opens, Sarah goes to greet Jill – who when is told (unseen) her mother is waiting to see her storms off out of the flat.

EPISODE 69: 4th FEBRUARY 1965: Janice and Dick are talking about Charlie, she mentions she’s been out with him a couple of times and finds him very entertaining. Dick says it’s none of his business.
Carlos and Vi are talking about the film company that is working in the area, Vi notes all the young girls are sprucing themselves up in the hope of being noticed to get asked to be part of the production. Carlos talks about how he knows a little about the production of movies; his cousin Pepe has featured in El Kid as an extra – he was seen on a horse.
“Anyway Sarah gave me a cup of coffee and I got back into the car and started that dreary journey all the way back again. I hate the M1 – especially at night. It’s sort of hypnotic – I’m always terrified of dropping off to sleep.” – Meg
Meg shares her concerns with Philip. Firstly Jill refusing to speak to her in London. Secondly how she’s become bored of the same faces and problems at the motel. And third being alone. Philip says she should remarry, she says it’s all too late for that now and there isn’t anyone in her life anyway.
Dick tells Kitty that Janice has been seeing someone else to make Brian jealous. Kitty thinks they’re both being silly.
At a roadside Carlos is hitching a ride, his motorbike has broken down. Gary Simmons stops and gives him a lift. They get talking, and Gary is into goods supplies. Carlos mentions he forgot to put in a food order yesterday while Meg was away, Gary suggests he might be able to help.

EPISODE 70: 5th FEBRUARY 1965: Gary has turned up at the motel with a boot full of frozen veg to help Carlos get away with Meg not finding out he’d forgotten to put the stock order in. But when Carlos decides to come clean and suggests Meg take a look at the supplies Gary make excuses that it wouldn’t be wise – so Carlos buys the goods for £10.
Brian finally decides to visit Janice and say sorry, to his surprise she accepts his apology. He invites her out, but she says she has a dinner date with Mr Forward, a working meal. Brian is fine with this and suggests tomorrow night instead, she accepts.
Winnie has invited Christine round for a chat, and Christine has been becoming friendly with Winnie’s brother Ralph the local milkman. Winnie tries to dig into Christine’s personal issues, but she isn’t having any of it – but thanks her for her concern.
Carlos: “Mrs. Blundell she show me the ‘Gay Gordons”
Meg: “Well, I’d like to show you a few gay cabbages that need shredding, if that’s all right with you?”
Dick gives Hilda the bad news that he can’t do the play, they’ll have to find someone else. Over at Charlie Forward’s flat Janice is invited in after their ‘working dinner’. He makes moves on her, but she resists, and she says she wants to go home. Charlie notes the door is locked…

EPISODE 71: 8th FEBRUARY 1965: Charlie has Janice locked in his flat, and is refusing to open the front door. ‘Oh come on relax honey, stop playing hard to get all of a sudden – we’re adults we know what we’re doing.’ Luckily for Janice the phone rings, it’s Brian asking if they’d finished their business so he can pick her up. Charlie reluctantly backs down.
Back at the Jarvis’ Janice tells Brian he was right about Charlie Forward, and how when he telephoned Charlie was in the middle of making a pass at her. Brian suggests he give Charlie a strong warning to lay off, but Janice says she doesn’t want any more trouble.
Ralph pops into the motel with the milk delivery but senses an uncomfortable atmosphere emanating from Christine. She makes it clear they are ‘just friends’, nothing more. Ralph protests and says he’s so very fond of her.
“I’m going to steer clear of Charlie Forward in future.” – Janice Gifford
Meg and Philip are having a coffee over paperwork in the office when a knock on the door startles them, Jill is standing at the other side of the door.

EPISODE 72: 9th FEBRUARY 1965: Jill explains to Philip and Meg she isn’t back in Kings Oak for the foreseeable, she’s only returned on a short stay to pick up her things, she’s moving to London and has managed to get a job at Silhouette Magazine.
“That’s right, Mrs Blundell I’m not married with a baby! Work that one out!” – Christine.
Vi is probing Christine about why someone would be saying such dirty things about her around the village and finally, Christine comes clean – she’s an unmarried mother – Vi is dumbstruck, for once.
Vi tells Meg all about Christine and is left dumbstruck for a second time on the same day when Meg says she knew already. Meg suggests Vi keep out of other people’s business. Vi is offended ‘are you accusing me of being a busybody?’ Meg responds ‘yes’ with Vi, in horror, noting ‘Well, really – in all my born days!’ Vi suggests she was just giving Meg concerned advice, Meg responds it was nothing of the sort – it was gossip and it will not be spread in her motel.
“I’ve got this wonderfully exciting job – in the typing pool of Sarah’s magazine Silhouette, you know, it has terrific possibilities” – Jill.
Sandy has a date at the motel with Kate Warboys, Jill and Meg make it a special evening for the pair with a special table and food.
At Traveleaze car hire Charlie informs Dick that he feels Janice isn’t very good at her work and she should be sacked, (Dick knows about Charlie’s pass at Janice but hasn’t told Charlie he knows) Dick disagrees and says she’s very good as a secretary. Dick says unless Charlie has a good strong reason for her dismissal she will stay…

EPISODE 73: 10th FEBRUARY 1965: Dick and Charlie row over Janice and her position at the car hire, Dick suggests there must be a reason that Charlie wants to sack her – he suggests they call her in to find out what the problem is – Charlie begins to back down.
“You know, I must admit that I’ve come to like Janice far more than I would ever have thought possible…” – Kitty
Kitty, having come around to liking Janice recently, is left doubting her again when troublesome Charlie arrives at the shop and casually does down Janice suggesting she’s flirting with all the drivers at the car hire and he doesn’t know what to do. Kitty hopes he’s mistaken.

EPISODE 74: 11th FEBRUARY 1965: Christine is talking about her growing friendship with local milkman Ralph. She wonders if she should tell him about her baby.
“There’s other points to be taken into consideration, too. Do you think he loves you enough to take your child as well?” – Philip.
Charlie Forward makes small talk with Janice – she’s completely unaware of how he’s attempted to have her sacked from the car hire – he apologises for the other night. Then attempts to woo her into another date, but is rejected. She wants their relationship to be strictly business – he agrees and then goes on to list faults with her work and the office.
Sandy has another date with Kate. This time they’re off to the cinema. Later Jill returns from her night out with Jonathan, very drunk, she falls into Philips’s arms ‘Just what do you think you’re playing at?’ he asks her.

EPISODE 75: 12th FEBRUARY 1965: Philip continues to chastise a drunk Jill, suggesting she’s behaving like a spoilt child. Does she not realise coming in so late her mother would be worried? He says he lied and said Jill had called saying she would be late, Jill is grateful ‘I just didn’t think, I was enjoying myself.’
“I love mum, and I like Jonathan enormously. I wouldn’t want to hurt either of them [earnestly] You do believe that don’t you?” – Jill
The next day, Ralph has given Christine a lift to the motel. She asks how fond of her he is, Ralph says she knows very much. She is about to bring the subject to her child but they are interrupted by Vi Blundell.
Marylin Gates pops into the motel for a drink with her fella Dennis Hicks. She notes they were passing and thought they’d pop in and see how the motel is doing. Marilyn orders a Martini while Dennis has a draught bitter, and is feeling quite bitter at the cost – five and six. Later Marilyn’s real reason for visiting becomes clear – she’s heard about the film being made nearby, Philip disappoints her by noting she’s arrived a week too early.
Charlie Forward has asked Janice to type up lots of paperwork, making her work very late. Dick is far from impressed. He relieves her of her duties and says he’ll deal with Charlie.
Meg tries to broach the subject of Jill’s idea that she has feelings for Philip but is interrupted by another vile phone call about Christine.

EPISODE 76: 15th FEBRUARY 1965: The reception only has one line currently, so Jill has rushed to the end of the driveway to use the payphone to call the police while Meg keeps the nuisance caller on the telephone. Later Meg and Jill try a process of elimination. Who knows about the baby, there aren’t that many. They close in on it possibly being Mrs Lacey (the paternal grandmother of Christine’s baby). The police trace the call to the village green payphone but the caller had left by the time they got there.
Jill: “The police might have traced the call, though. It couldn’t have been much more than a minute before I got through to them, after leaving here I mean.”
Meg: “Lets hope so… Telephone filth. Anonymously. [shrugs] Oh, envy, malice, depravity. A sick mind Jill”
Marilyn pops back into the motel and spots Carlos – who having had a terrible experience with her previously – asks her to go away. He locks her out of the motel. Jill demands he lets Marilyn in.
At the Traveleaze Car Hire Dick corners Charlie again about his misery making ploys towards Janice. He gives Charlie an ultimatum – stop harassing Janice or the company will cease to operate.
Marilyn asks Meg for a job at the motel – with the extra work due to the film crew using the facilities, Meg declines. Carlos is delighted and opens the door in preparation of Miss Gates’ departure.
Dick is left stunned when Kitty asks if he’s having an affair with Janice!

EPISODE 77: 16th FEBRUARY 1965: Dick ensures that his relationship with Janice is as her boss at the car hire firm and as her prospective father-in-law anywhere else. Kitty backs down realising she’s been a bit foolish over the situation.
At the shop Miss Tranter has brought a Hyacinth for Owen Webb’s wife, he arrives back from the hospital where he brings the good news that there as been an improvement with his better half. Miss Tranter says she’s pleased and leaves with the plant.
At the car hire, Charlie appears ‘a new man’, and suggests Janice have an early lunch with Brian. At the motel, the first of the film crew arrive with cameraman Bob Striker checking in.
Owen Webb calls Meg to say he can no longer assist Sandy with his maths as his wife will soon be leaving the hospital and they’re both retiring to Bournemouth. Having had a chat with Philip about the extra workload, Meg reconsiders and calls Marilyn offering her a waitressing position. The phone rings once more with another vile message for Christine – this time the police are waiting at the pay phone.

EPISODE 78: 17th FEBRUARY 1965: Ralph’s sister Winnie is exposed as the nuisance telephone caller leaving Ralph distraught. He visits the motel and chats to Christine and Meg in the office about the calls that had been directed at Christine and her illegitimate baby. He explains that last year Winnie had suffered a mental breakdown and hasn’t been herself for sometime.
“When the police called at my house and told me… about Winnie… well, I never felt so, so …it was humiliating. At first I was, you know, angry… Well, who wouldn’t have been? Then I got thinking and I saw her, Winnie” – Ralph
Marilyn begins her first day back at the motel as a waitress, and Carlos is not happy. But he has a business arrangement later, Meg suggests he meet the man in The Crown, which is near Kitty’s shop if its informal business. Carlos isn’t saying what kind of business it is.
Ralph explains that his sister has become jealous of Christine and thought he was going to leave home, so in her distressed state of mind began the phone calls.
Carlos buys a birthday present for his wife Josephina from Gary, the wholesale merchant, a brand new radio for £3. Harry the pub landlord warns for the price he’s paid ‘its too good to be true’, can Carlos trust where this fella is getting his goods from?
Meg and Philip are in a jovial mood in the kitchen. The film crew have had a good evening, and a nightcap for the pair before bed sees them have one of their many candid conversations. Philip goes in for a kiss. Meg responds ‘Don’t you ever, ever do that again!’.

EPISODE 79: 18th FEBRUARY 1965: Kitty has won £250 on the premium bonds and Dick is thinking of ways she can spend it. She tells him she won’t be spending it, it’s going into the bank to help pay off the loan he took out.
Gary pops into the kitchen and asks Carlos to store some boxes for him, just for a night or two, Carlos is happy to help.
Meg is talking to Kitty over at the Jarvis’ parlour about last night and how Philip stuck a smacker on her lips. Kitty says how angry she must be, Meg admits it’s not anger that she feels. But despite Jill’s suspicions she’s never had loving feelings for Philip, or so she thought. Kitty suggests as it was just a drunken smooch attempt they all should just put it behind them.
Meg ponders if she is falling in love with Philip.
Jill is feeling unwell, and it’s her last day in Kings Oak for the foreseeable with her return to London imminent. Philip suggests she has an early night, which she does. Once she’s gone Marilyn explains that Jill went dizzy and unsteady and nearly fainted.
A lorry driver rushes into the foyer asking for the police to be called, and someone’s hi-jacked his truck.

EPISODE 80: 19th FEBRUARY 1965: The police arrive and speak to the lorry driver, Tom Parker, about the robbery of his stolen truck. Meg has given him a bandage for a head wound, though he refuses to seek further medical assistance. He tells the police the lorry is full of cigarettes.
“That’s what I like about dad. He suddenly picks up a conversation that was dropped a couple of days ago and expects you to know what he’s on about…” – Brian
Dick wants Kitty to reconsider putting the £250 she’s won in the bank, he thinks she should treat herself. Dick is also wondering if Brian will get involved with the Kings Oak Players after Hilda Duvene asked him to design their sets. He says he’s thinking about it.
The police note its the 5th lorry hi-jack in the past four weeks. Meg decides to give Tom a room for the night and another brandy.
Jill is suffering from mumps so is having to remain in bed at the motel for a couple of weeks more. Meg rings Sarah in London and lets her know.
The director and producer of the film in production near Kings Oak are discussing Marilyn and her figure – she might be useful for a small walk-on part.
Sandy is talking to Tom about the incident with the Lorry, Tom says his truck was stolen by an organised gang, it was done timed to perfection. Sandy asks what has been stolen. Tom says whoever is planning the raids know the lorries and know the routes, one week frozen foods are stolen, then transistor radios and now cigarettes.
Overhearing the conversation in reception – and remembering the warning the pub landlord gave him about Gary – Carlos looks in the boxes he’s been keeping in the kitchen for Gary. He is horrified when he sees they’re full of cigarettes.

EPISODE 81: 22nd FEBRUARY 1965: Carlos reluctantly confides in Philip that he is in big trouble, and shows him a box of stolen cigarettes.
“If these are stolen – and its pretty obvious they are – no one travels around with five thousand cigarettes – what else can we do other than call the police?” – Philip
Worried he’ll lose his work permit Carlos asks Philip not to mention his name concerning the stolen goods. Philip says he’ll tip off the police about Gary and his boxes anonymously when he returns to collect them.
Kitty shows a letter to Dick she’s had from their daughter Leslie, who informs them that she’s marrying Maurice Grant, a doctor at St.Joseph’s Hospital Adelaide. An air fare has been arranged for Kitty to fly out for the wedding.
Over at The Crown Sgt. Glover is asking landlord Harry if he’s seen anyone trying to flog stolen goods, he mentions a man acting oddly who sold a radio to the chef at the Crossroads Motel. Dick listening in, is swift to inform Meg of the gossip.
Philip decides to take the boxes of cigarettes to the police, but he’s too late and he’s caught with them in Meg’s car.
EPISODE 82: 23rd FEBRUARY 1965: In the motel foyer the police question Philip about the cigarettes, he says he was taking them to the police station as they’d been left in the foyer by persons unknown. He is taken to the station to make a statement. In the process, Meg hears about stolen frozen food and begins to realise just how much Carlos has been involved in unwittingly shifting some of the stolen goods.
At the Jarvis’ Kitty is fretting about going to Australia for the wedding of her daughter Lesley. Dick says its a once in a lifetime chance that she mustn’t turn down. Kitty questions who will run the shop. Brian suggests Amy Turtle.
Christine is talking to Vi about her future, her parents may be moving south, and her father has been offered a promotion which means she’d be left in the midlands. She’s worried where she will live, many landlords won’t take a single, unmarried, parent as a tenant.
“Come in and sit down, Ruth. I could hardly believe it when you rang up this morning. Talk about a voice from the past!” – Meg
Ruth Bailey ‘an attractive woman in her early thirties’ is waiting in reception to be attended to, Marilyn eventually arrives from the kitchen and wonders where everyone is. Ruth says she’s here to see Meg.
Kitty gets a phone call from Lesley in Australia confirming the wedding arrangements. Kitty agrees to fly out for the big day.
Meg and Ruth are talking about ‘the good old days’ and how its been six years since she was last in the village for her sister’s wedding. Meg asks Ruth how her husband Gerald is doing. Ruth changes the subject, brushing off the question saying he’s working in London.
Ruth compliments the motel. Meg notes that she’s paid off all the money she borrowed for the conversion and is hoping it won’t be too long before she can expand the accommodation and facilities.

EPISODE 83: 24th FEBRUARY 1965: Midweek in Kings Oak and Carlos is worrying about what will happen to him with the police investigation into Gary Simmons.
Kitty is making plans for her visit to Australia, she has three days to organise her three weeks away – while Jill is restless being confined to bed with the mumps.
Meg has an idea, while Ruth is in the Midlands why doesn’t she help run the Shopday Store for Kitty?
Gary Simmons has called Carlos and made a pick-up date for later this evening to collect the cases he’d left in Carlos’ care. Meg has informed the police, who are to oversee the ‘handover’ of the goods and nab Simmons.
“Come on Carlos. The sooner you get it over the better” – Meg.
At The Crown, the exchange is to be done, with Simmons unaware the law is onto him.

EPISODE 84: 25th FEBRUARY 1965: Carlos is in The Crown with Sgt. Glover watches as Gary arrives to pick up his box of stolen cigarettes. Dick and Brian are also in the boozer and are talking to Carlos and Gary, which makes Carlos nervous. Dick makes a joke to Harry, the landlord, about the police. Gary decides it’s time he left, as he opens the door to leave he’s met by the police.
Kitty is telling Dick about Ruth Bailey and how she’ll be helping out with the shop during Kitty’s time in Australia. At the motel, the star of the movie – Julia Fleming – has lost her voice and is causing the director a nervous breakdown.
“Are you doing anything at seven o’clock tomorrow morning Marilyn?” – Lee, film director
With Julia unhappy to work – suggesting she’s unwell – the production execs decide to use Marilyn as a body double for some shots to save a wasted day, she’ll be filming at Fourways Corner in the morning.
At the car hire office Dick is talking to Charlie about Kitty’s pending holiday, he was wondering if he could get an advance on the firm’s account – £200 should suffice. Charlie doesn’t look to be in a generous mood.

EPISODE 85: 26th FEBRUARY 1965: Amy Turtle and Ruth Bailey will be sharing the duties of running the shop while Kitty is away.
Brian: “Where did you have your passport photograph taken?”
Kitty: “That little shop by the Launderette.”
Brian: “Oh! I’d have said Holloway Jail”
Marilyn is furious, and soaking wet, she confronts Lee and Bob of the film crew – they tell her they never film when its raining. For three hours she stood in the rain at Fourways Corners.
At the Jarvis’ parlour Harry has popped in from The Crown with a bottle of champagne, Meg, Amy, Brian and Ruth celebrate the forthcoming wedding and toast a good journey for Kitty.
