Gordon Amos is in the pub talking about his new job at ‘The Clarion’ newspaper. He says its not quite as glamorous as people think, its more dreary industrial reports rather than film premieres

“I don’t want any soft-soaping do-gooder meddling in my business” – George.

Hugh Mortimer

Sargent Glover pops into the motel and asks Meg to identify some items that may have been stolen by Mr Gilbey recently from the motel. Meg confirms several items stolen from Chalet 6 are in the haul, but is disappointed to learn the bed and furniture were likely already sold by the time they arrested him.

Glover suggests that the motel really should have night security to halt this type of issue, she says at the moment she just can’t afford a night porter.

Hugh Mortimer and Dick Jarvis meet. Hugh offers his last proposition, £5250 and new premises in the basement of a tower block Mortimer Investments own. There however is one catch. Hugh wants to takeover the car hire firm, and make Dick a manager. Dick accepts the offer, much to Hugh’s surprise.

Philip is pondering divorcing his estranged wife Doreen, currently in prison. “One drink is too many. Twenty are not enough. You just don’t have that first drink. Not ever. Don’t kid yourself about willpower. About knowing when you’ve had enough. It’s a delusion. It never works, it won’t.” – Robert, Alcoholics Anonymous

Hilda Duvene pops to the motel to talk to Meg about Sandy’s role in the latest play from the Kings Oak Players. She manages to sell Meg a ticket in the process. ‘It’s a very clever farce, full of double-entendres’ Sandy may just be the next Frankie Howerd.

Sandy Richardson

Having heard about the fight at the village hall weekly dance when the older Kings Oak residents had to mingle with the ‘cool cats’, aka todays youth, and it descended into chaos she thinks opening a youth-aimed outlet – which she had previously pondered – might just be a good idea. It’ll leave the ‘oldies’ to their village hall in peace.

Marilyn suggests maybe trying out a youth-aimed evening at the motel first with a Friday night event in the function room and see how it goes.

Hugh Mortimer arrives with the legal paperwork for Dick to sign, he’s just about to sign, but having read it says it’s not something he can agree to sign. Hugh is bemused.

Meg Richardson

Over dinner Hugh tells Meg that he doesn’t usually make mistakes when it comes to human weakness, but he has with Dick. Several good offers and he still has been turned down. Meg says Dick is a fool to have turned down the offer.

Hugh says very much so, he had been putting in fake information to the local newspaper that the council were planning to build a Civic Centre on the site at Longton. Knowing Gordon Amos was involved with the paper he knew Dick would find out.

Hugh says the problem is that Dick is too honest – and came clean about the council plans to him, so he couldn’t sign it. Hugh’s plan to get Dick to sign has fallen once more. Meg is outraged at his tactics.

Ken, a car driver for Dick, has been wooing Ruth. She finally invites him to the parlour for a cup of tea, it leads to a kiss. Brian walks-in mid-snog and looks angry.

Marilyn boasts to Vi that she might be singing with Georgie and his band. Vi, after the village hall fiasco, isn’t impressed and notes Marilyn is probably best left to singing only when in the bath. Marilyn is furious.

“Well, I hope you’ll both be very happy. Your voice and his rowdy racket should go very well together!” – Vi Blundell

Meg bumps into Gordon Amos at the shop, she tells him how he’s been duped by Hugh and he shouldn’t run with the Civic Centre story, as its not got any truth to it.

Blundell, set against any youthful events at the motel is charmed by Georgie – Benny Wilmott – who claims to have observed her graceful dancing at the village hall. She is convinced he’s such a nice young man.

Meg is having second thoughts about the beat groups at the motel. What if they cause the row they did at the village Hall? Vi is shocked to hear such negativity. She suggests that Meg accompany her to the old time dancing to hear Georgie’s weekly interval performance and make her mind up from seeing him live. Meg agrees.

Hilda pops into the shop and asks if Ruth can try and sell some tickets and put up a poster for the event. Ruth thinks its a great idea.

Gordon tries to get Meg to find out what Hugh’s next move will be in regards to Longton and its redevelopment plans. Meg refuses to get involved.

He says she’s missing out on a lot of income by not making use of it. A petrol station would be perfect! She’s not convinced.

“Motel’s and filling stations go together, like Adam and Eve.. almost. People who come to a place like this come by car, right?

“So what services are there for the car? There’s everything for the guest, but not a drop of juice for the old jallopy!” – Sam Redway

Robert and George meet to discuss his lapse back into boozing. George fears he will soon lose his job at the pottery factory if he carries on as he’s going.

Hugh has popped into the motel for a drink, but as Meg is out his only company is Sandy. Hugh tells him he breeds horses, and suggests he takes a look at the stables sometime, and ride one. Sandy says it sounds ‘okay’.

Meg watches Benny Wilmott and his group at the village hall dance. Vi is loving the music – after his praise of her waltzing – Meg is a bit unsure about ‘the noise’

Back at the motel, Meg sees Hugh drinking at the bar, she greets him by reminding him that ‘I think it’s only fair to tell you that I haven’t changed my mind about how you’ve handled Dick’. They however mellow towards each other and she invites him to the anniversary party.

Episode status: Wiped/Missing

EPISODE 120: April 16th: Hilda is in The Crown trying to get Harry to stock some tickets to sell of the Kings Oak Players’ latest production, as well as put a poster up in the bar. Harry looks rather critically at the artwork for the production. He ponders ‘This isn’t art, is it?’.

Meg calls Dick to invite him, Brian, Janice and Ruth to a party to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the Motel. The Crossroads will be two-years-old on April 18th.

Benny Wilmott

Hugh invites Meg and Sandy to his country retreat for Easter Monday. She says she’d love to, but can’t leave the motel. Later Philip suggests she goes for the break, he and the rest of the staff can cope. She says she’ll think about it.

And while she’s on about thoughts, she asks Philip what he thinks about the motel having a petrol station attached to it. He tells Meg it sounds like a brilliant idea.

Marilyn is disappointed Meg has booked Henry Whittaker and his Players for the anniversary party instead of Georgie Saint and the Dragons. ‘Tomorrow night is a simple celebration, not a Roman orgy’.

The next day, the motel is glitzed to the hilt in anniversary decorations as Benny Wilmott rocks up to the motel to set up the band as a last-minute favour to Marilyn after Henry and his Players cancelled due to a double booking.

The party is in full flow. Hugh Mortimer’s face is one of pain as the beat music blasts out in the foyer. Brian and Janice are more entertained by the sounds.

[Raising his glass]”All glasses charged?.. Good – then I’ll give you a toast to this wonderful establishment, and the charming lady who is now celebrating its second anniversary…” – Hugh Mortimer.

Amy Turtle

Gordon visits Dick at the car hire office and tells him about Hugh’s ‘little fairy story’ about the council and their civic centre plans for Longton.

Amy Turtle is boasting to Hilda Duvene how many show tickets she’s managed to sell, nearly 30. Hilda is impressed, Harry at The Crown has only managed 14.

Hugh meets with Dick to propose yet another idea. Dick asks if the council story was his device to make him sell – he admits yes, but says that was then and this is now.

Hugh surprises Dick with a new proposition. His company is building a new office block in a prime location in Longton, on the corner of Woodberry Road and Mill Street. He offers Dick part of the ground floor, with parking spaces. Dick asks what the catch is. Hugh says none, only that as the previous offer Dick would be a manager and not the owner..

Episode status: Wiped/Missing

EPISODE 123: April 21st: Dick calls Meg and tells her he’s accepting Hugh’s latest offer, even if it does seem to be ‘too good to be true’.

Sam talks with Meg about the petrol station,  he offers to run it for her. Dick later finds out and asks if he’s leaving the car hire for this new venture. He says plans are in early stages and anyway it would take three months to get the filling station extension built onto the motel.

After rehearsing on the stage Sandy returns to the motel and decides he can’t eat anything which amazes Meg and Carlos, Christine suggests he must be suffering from stage fright.

“You pay a very pretty compliment Meg, and mix quite a passable dry martini” – Hugh

Meg observes while talking to Hugh at the motel bar how he always seems to be in command of everything. She then disappoints him by inviting him to the Kings Oak Players show tomorrow night. He says however, as its for Meg, he will put up with ‘amateur dramatics for one night’.

Dick gets news from Kitty in Australia that their daughter Lesley will undergo her operation in three weeks.

Episode status: Wiped/Missing

EPISODE 124: April 22nd: The day of the play has arrived and Sandy is more nervous than ever. It is very unlike him to be off his food, Meg is slightly concerned. Sandy explains how he has to walk on with a tray, and he was so nervous all the cups kept rattling… Carlos’ advice is to speak loud and look like its enjoyable.

Amy is also talking about the theatre show to Ruth, she says the production in ticket sales has raised eighty pounds for the hospital charity they support. At the Car Hire firm Janice has forgotten to remove Ken Church from the rota, they don’t have a driver for this evening. Dick says he’ll do a little shift, he can fit it in before the play, which he is also taking part in.

Meg, Ruth, Brian and Janice are in the theatre audience. Unbeknown to them Dick is stuck at the other side of Heathbury with a broken-down car. Hilda is hysterical, Sandy’s trousers are too short and stage manager Eddy is annoyed someone has smoked all the prop cigarettes.

The second half of the episode begins with the play, with Sandy as Fibbin, George as Major Wilson and Hilda as Lady Crowborough. A collection of calamities ensues – the lighter fails to work, Hilda blows imaginary smoke anyway, George gets stuck between two sofas, later his monocle falls from his eye, and makes him muddle up his words, Sandy carries a suitcase that is supposed to be heavy but clearly isn’t and repeats the same line twice while the scenery wobbles. (This play may have been to take the mick out of TV critics who had accused Crossroads of such issues)

The play is halted by the arrival of a police offer – PC Williams.

Episode status: Wiped/Missing

EPISODE 125: April 23rd: Hilda has fainted to the floor following the announcement by PC Williams the play must be halted. Amy Turtle says she called the police when she realised the money had gone from the box office.

George says they can’t surely question everyone, its a full house. In the audience, Miss Tranter notes to Brian that the policeman was a very good part. Brain says he wasn’t part of the story, either way, she says he has ‘excellent diction’.

“I was all ready to bring the tea tray on when this policeman suddenly appeared. A good thing I wasn’t carrying the tray, I’d have dropped it.” – Sandy

Doreen Carroll

After a search of the theatre it appears Amy’s handbag had been muddled up with Hilda’s and the money is accounted for, Hugh arrives late, asking if he’s missed much ‘It’s hardly started’ Meg notes.

At the motel Philip and Christine are at the reception. Philip suggests it would be nice to meet baby Mark sometime. Christine says it would be nice but she doesn’t like bringing him to the motel, he says he has a surprise for her.

Later at the play Hugh is asleep, so is Janice. Miss Tranter is fiddling with some opera glasses and Brian is trying to find the ‘best’ chocolates in the box to eat in the dimly lit auditorium.

She’s just got out of jail for that crime. Doreen and Philip talk about her time in prison, and also how he hasn’t yet begun the legal formalities to divorce. She also asks for money due to her money being tied up temporarily.

At the Jarvis’ Ruth, Dick and Brian are discussing the play; Ruth praises Dick for his performance and Brian for his sets. They also ponder George’s future, he has made plans to move to London and find new work.

Carlos is excited to visit his wife Josefina and hasn’t time to make small talk with Vi Blundell.

Carlos and Josefina are having a lovely time out in Malvern, until Carlos’ bike breaks down. Later at the girls school Carlos gets mistaken for an electrician by the headmistress, until she catches him in the arms of Josefina.

Brian talks to Janice about Ruth’s ‘lack of morals’ when it comes to men, while Meg only has one man on her mind, Hugh. She finds his business chatter fascinating. She is curious as to why he wants to buy the old house Fairlawns about a mile down the road, when they both visited it they found it delightful – but it is awfully big just for Hugh to live in.

Girls school headmistress Miss Henderson is furious with both Carlos and Josefina, they try to explain that they are married, but either way she doesn’t like being made a fool of; nor does she like ‘hanky-panky’ on her sofa.

Phillip Carroll

Doreen waits outside the motel on the driveway, waiting for Philip. Once he arrives in his van on the driveway, she tells him they need to sort out their divorce plans. She talks about her potential latest job, it’s at the local chocolate factory, the previous vacancy ‘fell through’ when they found out Doreen was just out of prison.

Worried about her living situation Philip offers Doreen more money, but she declines until he suggests they make it simply a loan…

“Look if you won’t let me give you the money, then consider it a loan. When you’ve got settled into a job and on your feet again, you can pay me back” – Philip

Marilyn begins a charm offensive when she realises that new guest Leonard Silver is a record producer. She tells him how she’s a singer (exaggerating her involvement) with a band he should meet. He says he’ll think about it.

Later Doreen tells Philip when he offers her a lift into Kings Oak, ‘It is only a mile east, not far I can walk’, that maybe they shouldn’t see each other anymore. He’s suspicious as to why she suddenly feels like this. Turning to look back at the motel he sees both Meg and Christine watching on through the window and has his suspicions confirmed.

Episode status: Wiped/Missing

EPISODE 128: April 28th: Benny and Cy of ‘Georgie Saint and the Dragons’, arrive at the motel and are greeted by Marilyn who has arranged for them to meet with motel guest – record producer – Leonard Silver.

Benny: “I know you must get pestered all the time Mr Silver with would-be pop stars…”

Leonard: “Yes all the time. Do you realise just what sort of jungle you’re going into? Out of the ten thousand or more groups in this country, perhaps twenty will make it! Even then there’s no guarantee they’ll stop up there. Still, it’s no good to tell you all this, I don’t suppose it’ll put you off…”

Benny tells Leonard how the band won ‘Midlands Best of the Beat’ contest last year and they have several regular gigs. Mr Silver promises he’ll pop in and see them perform.

Brian fancies taking Janice out for a Chinese to celebrate a promotion at work, well he hasn’t got it yet but he’s heard from his boss Len Crawford that it’s ‘as good as’.

Meg accompanies Hugh to view his potential new home in the area, they both enjoy gin and tonic. Later Sandy expresses his dislike of Hugh. When Sandy talks to Meg and Hugh about his football match earlier in the day Hugh recalls how he was a Rugby Blue at Oxford, which bores Sandy silly. Once Hugh has gone he does an unflattering impression of Mortimer, which Meg tries not to find funny.

Ruth finds out from Hilda Duvene that Brian Jarvis is thinking of moving in with Janice and her parents. She asks Brian where Hilda would get such a silly idea from – he says its not silly and its now a fact. He’s going to move in with Janice at the weekend. Ruth is furious he’s leaving Dick at such a difficult time.

Meg talks about the petrol station plan Sam has suggested. Hugh gives her some advice. ‘He wants to lease the land – don’t do that’ Hugh warns while she gets a small income from rent, Sam will be raking in the petrol profits. Dick doesn’t believe his excuse, and Ruth thinks its more to do with her than George.

Marilyn is telling Carlos just how great Benny’s group was. So much so Mr Silver has taken them on with a contract and will be recording a single in London ‘Scream Baby Scream’ on the A-side and ‘Brum, Brum, Brum’ on the B-side. She’s only sorry he had to leave before she got to perform. But decides to show Carlos how she sang, noting she takes her shoes off ‘just like Sandie Shaw’ to which Vi says ‘that’s un-hygienic that is’ and then Marilyn busts out the first few lines of ‘Downtown’ by Petula Clark

“It’s not right Philip. A young girl like that getting all these silly ideas in her head about going on the stage. I can just see her in London, a real flibberygibbett that’s what she’ll be – you mark my words!” – Vi

Brian Jarvis

Brian takes a call from George in London, he says he got the job and he’ll be leaving Heathbury at the end of next week. Ruth says she’s pleased for him.

He tells Christine that he is leaving the motel to give his marriage another try despite his feelings for Christine. Christine walks away.

Dick is unimpressed by the critical review of Laughter at Moonlight. ‘The production was competent, but never reached an impressive standard… The cast managed to bring some life to a play that died – and should have been buried – in the 1930s’.

Philip is saying goodbye to Carlos, Sandy and Marilyn at the motel.

“It is a sad day for the Crossroads Motel, and a sad day for Carlos Rafael – he lose a good amigo. You have been very kind to Carlos, Philip” – Carlos

Josefina Rafael

Later at the reception he says his farewell’s to Meg. He tells her how he’ll never forget how kind she’s been to him and everything she’s done to help him. He asks Meg to say goodbye to Christine for him ‘its better this way’.

In the driveway Philip is getting into his van when Christine appears from the side. She says she thinks he is acting very honourably, then rushes away.

Hugh bamboozles Meg with all the ins and outs of opening a petrol station, from planning permissions to residents complaining and needing a licence to store petroleum. For a four-pump station she’s also looking to spend at least £18,000. He then says if she went into it in conjunction with a petrol company, they should cover most of the costs, but she would have to only sell their products. Hugh offers to help her with the venture. Things suddenly don’t seem so bad.

NOTES OF INTEREST

The group ‘George Saint and the Dragons’ was also used as an idea in Reg Watson’s other serial The Young Doctors in the 1970s when a storyline featured ‘Georgie Saint and the Dragons’.

The motel’s second anniversary is celebrated in episode 120 airing on April 16th, but the second half of the episode set on April 18th – the day The Crossroads first opened its doors in 1963.

John Porter-Davidson makes his first appearance as Sam Redway in episode 116, one of the drivers at Dick’s car hire firm. Deke Arlon appears as Benny Wilmott, the singer/guitarist with Georgie Saint and the Dragons in episode 117. (Sam throughout April was written as Sam Readway, but from May onwards is Redway, so we have used this spelling for April also.)

Episode 128 sees comedian and presenter Don Maclean make his debut as Cy Townsend. Episode 39 sees the first appearance of Carlos’ wife Josefina played by Jill Betts. These later episodes are the start of the character becoming a regular.

Episode 118 Sam Redway notes the motel could do with a petrol station. This deviates away from the later printed history of the motel that stated a garage and petrol station had been opened by Charles Richardson some years prior to the motel opening.

Graham Weston and Pamela Greenall who are seen in scenes together at this time went on to marry. Graham’s most famous role in Crossroads was as garage boss Colin Dutton in the late 70s who accidentally murdered his secret lover and framed Benny Hawkins for it

Heathbury Theatre’s telephone number, as mentioned in episode 124, is ‘Heathbury 8394’. Episode 126 features footage recorded in Malvern and also at Aston Hall (which doubled as the girls school).

126 is the only complete episode to survive from 1965. There isn’t another full edition retained until 1966 and 496.
