Nolly airs on PBS Masterpiece
The three-part drama has begun airing stateside. On PBS Masterpiece the series is airing weekly on Sunday evenings. The American screening has seen rave reviews for the series penned by Russell T Davies and starring Helena Bonham-Carter.
The New York Times notes it is a ‘fun biographical drama’ adding ‘At just three episodes, it feels like hearing only the beautiful coda of a fuller work. As Nolly pleads her case that she has more to give — more star power to share, more story to tell — so too does Nolly.’
CNN Entertainment calls it a ‘splendid showcase for Helena Bonham Carter, “Nolly” zooms in on a very particular time and character in British history, revolving around the unceremonious firing of Noele Gordon, the star of a popular soap opera.’ They conclude ‘a project that gives Noele Gordon, even posthumously, something one suspects the near-forgotten star would have loved: the chance to take a final bow.’
The Boston Globe proclaims ‘‘Nolly’ a treat, thanks to Helena Bonham Carter’ continuing, ‘ It’s a warm, smart, and concise portrait of British actress Noele Gordon, known as Nolly’. On Helena’s performance, ‘Bonham Carter is fantastic — flamboyant, mordant, honest with herself, and, ultimately, winning… She, and the show, are a treat.’
The Chicago Tribune state ‘Helena Bonham Carter gives a very funny and affecting performance as Nolly Gordon, the imperious soap opera legend of British TV.’
