The 1980s: Crossroads continued to be sold from ATV and Central to each Independent Television region thus the production was never ‘networked’ in the schedules. One edition however in 1984 was networked in prime time due to displacement due to ITV Sport programming. This primetime aired episode of Crossroads reached over 18 million viewers.
In 1980 Crossroads was the most complained about TV programme the year to the IBA. The reason for the viewer complains? The serial had been moved around the schedules across the summer in order for the network to air Olympic coverage.
From April 1980 Crossroads airs thrice weekly; following IBA research that viewers wanted the show to air five nights a week – something ATV boss Charles Denton had also requested. The IBA’s response was to cut it from four episodes to three a week.
From January 1988 through to April 1988 Central cut the transmission frequency to twice a week. The number right of the programme title is the ‘viewers in millions’ rating system.

The Audits Of Great Britain (AGB) was replaced by the British Audience Research Board (BARB) in July 1981.
From August 1981 to December 1981 they decided to change the format of how programme ratings were listed: Rather than list the viewing figures BARB listed the top ten programmes only in their archive log. The actual rating data has not survived other that what is listed in Broadcast Magazine from the time. BARB brought back the original style ratings archive from January 1982 onwards, although still as a top ten list only until March 1984.
